Let the Community Speak: Students Step into Stories of Hong Kong’s Traditional Trades

From print shops to time-honoured stores — students record living heritage through real conversations

This tailor-made oral history learning journey offers secondary school students a structured, immersive experience in heritage documentation. Led by Walk in Hong Kong, the programme centres on the Sai Ying Pun and Sheung Wan area — rich in layered histories and cultural stories.

Students begin by learning how to conduct research and oral history interviews through guided classroom workshops. They are then taken on a field visit to meet and interview local shopkeepers. Guided by professional cultural facilitators, students gain first-hand experience in engaging with heritage bearers and capturing authentic narratives.

The programme concludes with a final session on organizing collected materials and presenting their learnings. The full series blends academic skill-building with meaningful community interaction and is suitable for integration into subjects such as Chinese, Liberal Studies/Citizenship and Social Development, and History.
