Next stop: State Theatre, An Exhibition Celebrating Its 65th Anniversary – and Beyond

Built in 1952, State Theatre is the last grand mid-20th century theatre still standing in Hong Kong today. A beguiling feat of architecture, the soaring arch bridge roof structure over the theatre is an internationally unique design. As a popular community landmark, it bore witness to the heyday of Hong Kong cinema.

In 2016, the “Save Our State” campaign galvanised public support to secure a Grade 1 historic building status for State Theatre. Yet, despite its exceptional heritage value, the future of the theatre is hanging in the balance, as the broader site it belongs to is going to be bought out.

At this exhibition, we are presenting exciting visualisations by four teams of young Hong Kong architects of possible future uses for State Theatre. We want the public to join hands to imagine, debate and build a shared future for this gem in our city.

Besides reliving the glory of State Theatre, the wide-ranging exhibition will feature various workshops, up-cycling fun and walking tours of North Point. As State Theatre marks its 65th anniversary, it is in our hands to make sure the best is yet to come for this truly “Made in Hong Kong” wonder.
