Touring the fishing village to learn about its unique history and customs from the 19th century to the present day.
Known as the “Venice of the East”, Tai O preserves British-era buildings, century-old stilt huts and Ming Dynasty temples, and the memories of Hong Kong’s fishing villages are sealed in dust.
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and take a tour with us into the “Venice of Hong Kong,” or Tai O, Hong Kong’s last fishing village. Tai O served as the main entry point of refugees fleeing China by boat after the Civil War in 1949. It is filled with stilt houses from the 19th century, temples built in the Ming Dynasty, and a police station turned hotel. Enjoy a beautiful boat ride as your guide tells you about this sleepy village!
Visit amazing village by ferry and talk with friendly villagers about the histories, their lives and foods. Thanks for Walking tour company's helpful and charming "translator", Meiling Wong. She showed us the featured and chronological police station ,Tai O Heritage Hotel. Nice experience, highly recommended!
I joined the Tai O Tour on the Tuen Ng Festival. It is a in-depth tour on the culture and history of Tai O. Paul's experiences helped us capture almost all of the important events of the 遊涌 (a festive event for the villagers there to pray and hope the god could protect them for good business and living). We have also visited local family with special living history and buildings in Tai O (house built on the river).
Some of the points of interest include:
Tai O Heritage Hotel
Admire the beautiful foreign décor of the hotel, a 110-year-old mansion which formerly housed the Tai O Marine Police Station.
Shrimp Paste Factory at Shek Tsai Po Street
Learn the traditional process of creating the aromatic sauce by mixing shrimp meat and salt in one of the two remaining shrimp paste factories in Hong Kong.
Salted Egg Yolk Workshop (add-on)
A hands-on workshop blending food culture and craftsmanship.
Dragon Boat Experience (add-on)
Feel the rhythm, teamwork, and spirit of Hong Kong’s dragon boat tradition.
