Oral History Workshop

An experiential oral history workshop that guides students from interview foundations to real-world practice, helping them collect, interpret, and present community stories with confidence.

Topic 1: Foundations of Oral History

This session introduces students to the essential foundations of oral history, including why personal narratives matter, how oral history differs from written sources, and what makes an interview meaningful and ethical. Through real examples and guided discussion, participants will learn basic interview principles, questioning techniques, and the role of oral history in preserving community memory, followed by a Q&A to deepen understanding.

Topic 2: Research Skills and Interview Simulation

In this module, students will learn effective strategies for collecting background information before an interview, including how to identify useful sources and prepare meaningful questions. Participants will then take part in mock interview exercises, receiving real-time guidance from the instructor. This hands-on practice helps students improve confidence, listening skills, and the ability to follow up naturally during conversations.

Topic 3: Field Interview Practicum

This practicum allows students to experience oral history interviewing in action, either through classroom simulations or community-based interviews with local shopkeepers and staff. Under the instructor’s live supervision, students will practise approaching interviewees, conducting respectful conversations, and adapting to real-world responses. The session builds confidence and helps students understand how oral history works beyond textbooks.

Topic 4: Documentation, Analysis, and Presentation

After interviews are completed, students must learn how to handle oral history materials responsibly. This session teaches methods for organising notes, transcripts, recordings, and key themes. Participants will also practise presenting their findings clearly, transforming personal stories into structured insights that can be shared through reports, exhibitions, or community storytelling projects.
