Capturing the colourful stories of Central & Western District

A collaboration between the Central & Western District Council and Walk in Hong Kong, the Central & Western District Cultural Map Project aims to showcase the colourful stories behind historic buildings, streets and shops in Central, Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui, and Kennedy Town.

In producing the pamphlet, a cultural education programme was organised for student participants from Caritas Chong Yuet Ming Secondary School and The University of Hong Kong. The youngsters not only learned about the distinctive character of Central & Western District, but they also got training in basic historical research and oral history interviews. After, they spoke to a host of shopkeepers in the district, before capturing on paper the tales they heard.

The end products of the project are the A Walking Guide to Central & Western District pamphlet and website. To support local artists and designers, the brilliant Candy of Laidbackclub Design & Illustration was engaged to create the maps and illustrations in the pamphlet.
